Energy storage is the answer to the volatile nature of renewable energy sources. Storage can now be deployed on an industrial scale, opening new horizons, namely balancing supply to the grid, network services and eligibility in non-interconnected markets. As the operator of the world’s largest lithium-ion plant, the Hornsdale Power Reserve in Australia that Neoen developed with Tesla and have been operating since 2017, Neoen is at the forefront of energy storage.
Neoen operates the Hornsdale Wind Farm in South Australia. Generation from the wind farm is bid into the Energy and Frequency Control (FCAS) markets.

YouDo were engaged to build a software solution that would capture and enhance the specific knowledge developed by Neoen. The goal was to develop a tool to give the team as many advantages and features as possible for allocated project budget, including a dashboard screen reflecting current electricity generation and dispatch status of assets. Auto-updating and near real-time data feeds.

Remote Delivery
With both the New Zealand and Australian border closed due to covid-19, flights grounded and some of the team members working from home, the joint Trans-Tasman project team adjusted and remotely delivered a purpose-built software tool for Neoen’s Australian assets. It was a show of force of how well remote software delivery is possible even under difficult circumstances.
Our team of software developers worked closely alongside the team from Neoen to gain insights into their processes. With these insights and our own industry expertise, we built a software solution that not only captured Neoen’s knowledge – but streamlined the operation teams’ processes to improve accuracy and efficiency.
As with all our projects, we maintained open communication with Neoen by clearly outlining our project methodology into sprints and meeting online after each sprint to assess progress and prepare for the next step.
Continuing to work together
YouDo are continuing to work with Neoen. This is an exciting project, with the Neoen team pushing the boundaries and developing new applications for their renewables programme.
